Sophie + Darren | Tideswell Church + The Fishpond, Matlock

Some weddings follow a script, and others are unapologetically, beautifully themselves. Sophie and Darren’s day was the latter in every single way, and honestly, it was one of those days where you feel genuinely privileged to be behind the lens.

Getting Ready | Two Doors Down from Each Other

Sophie was over at the holiday accommodation across the road, while Darren was getting ready at home. Which meant that as I made my way to Sophie, I was treated to the sight of a semi-naked Darren cheerfully holding court at his front door, chatting to friends and simultaneously wrangling the newest member of the family: their kitten.

Sophie’s prep was everything you’d want it to be. Relaxed, warm, and full of quiet excitement. Hair and makeup were well underway when I arrived, and Sophie had already laid out a beautiful little flatlay of the personal details she wanted captured. Even in that moment, you could see how much thought had gone into this day. Nothing about it was accidental.

The moment that really stopped me was watching Sophie’s daughter help her into her wedding dress. Some moments don’t need anything added. That was one of them.

And then there was the veil. “Til Death Do Us Party.” Perfectly, wonderfully Sophie.

Nipping back across to Darren was just as joyful. His energy was high, his smile wide, and when the vintage wagon pulled up to collect him, it all made perfect sense. The wagon was called The Twilight Zone, and for Darren, a wagon driver himself, it wasn’t just a quirky wedding car. It was the very first wagon he rode in as a young lad, out on the road with his dad. Seeing him climb back into that seat, with his dad behind the wheel, was the kind of full-circle moment that makes you smile with warm content.

The Ceremony | Tideswell Church

Tideswell Church is a building that commands your attention. Its gothic architecture is striking and dramatic, and it made the most fitting backdrop for two people who weren’t here to do things conventionally. Sophie and Darren had spoken about wanting to be their authentic selves, and from the moment Darren walked into that church, happily skipping down the aisle alongside his son and best man, the tone was set. There was already laughter bouncing off those ancient stone walls before a single word of the ceremony had been spoken.

Sophie walked into Home by Corey Taylor, and the choice said everything about what this day was really about: not performance, not tradition for tradition’s sake, but home. Safety. Each other.

The service was exactly what they’d asked for: short, sweet, and full of genuine commitment. No filler. Just the important stuff. The “I dos” that Sophie had said from the beginning were the ones that she was most excited about. And when that moment came, it was clear every bit of anticipation had been worth it.

Ashford-in-the-Water | The Couples Session

After the ceremony and family portraits, the wedding party loaded into The Twilight Zone, Darren back in his childhood seat with his dad at the wheel, heading towards Matlock. But first, a detour to Ashford-in-the-Water for some couples portraits. It’s one of those Derbyshire spots that quietly takes your breath away, and Sophie and Darren were completely at ease with each other in front of the camera. That’s what happens when two people are simply happy and trust their photographer.

The Fishpond, Matlock | Feasting, Speeches & Arcades

The reception at The Fishpond was set up banquet-style, which perfectly suited the warmth and informality of the whole day. A buffet feast, good company, and then the speeches.

The bridesmaids and pageboy had been flagged as the ones to watch on the dancefloor. Both mothers were on tissue duty. And Myles was set to bring the tears while Mike brought the laughs. All of that proved entirely accurate, but it was Myles’sMyles’s speech as Darren’s son and best man that floored the room. He had managed to get the entire 2024/25 Newcastle United squad to send in signed photos as a gift for his dad. I won’t pretend I kept it together watching Darren’s face in that moment. He certainly didn’t.

Matlock Bath | Something a Little Different

After the speeches, the whole wedding party headed down the strip of Matlock Bath to hit the arcades. I cannot overstate how much I love it when couples do this. When they say, “this is who we are,” and then actually show you. The lights, the noise, the laughter, the absolute refusal to follow any wedding rulebook. It was genuinely one of the most fun parts of any wedding day I’ve covered.

The Evening | Cake, Dancing & Exactly the Right People

Back at The Fishpond, Sophie and Darren cut their wedding cake, which deserves a mention all of its own because it was absolutely stunning. Then it was onto the first dance to I Am You by Uncle Lucius, and from that point, the dancefloor didn’t empty.

This was a day built entirely around two things: the people they love, and being completely, unashamedly themselves. Sophie said it best in the words they shared before the day: “Celebrating us and showing others how much we love each other.”

That’s exactly what they did.

Sophie and Darren, thank you for letting me be part of your day. For the kitten chaos, the skipping down the aisle, the tears over signed shirts, and the arcade machines. Every bit of it was perfect because every bit of it was you.
